OUR STORY
FROM 6 MEMBERS, WITH ONLY DREAMS TO AN ORGINISATION
This organization was founded, like many others, in the mind of a person. Sipho Joja had a brain wave during the South African lockdown. He was doing his very best to try and keep productive every day, but was struggling.
He then realized, there was no organization that taught young people how to stay productive (in the South African context) – atleast not that he knew of. He picked up the phone, called at least 10 friends, and right there Do Something SA was founded.
We since then have realized as an organization that we are capable of so much more. Now productivity is only one of the things we focus on. We focus on youth empowerment now. Our name is now Phakama, which means to “Rise Up.” This reflects us as a South African organization, and to be plain and simple – let us together, rise up and empower people, rise up and empower our future!

Sipho Joja
“By nature I am opportunist. I have a deep passion for reading, which forms my worldview. I’m hoping I can show young people that they are greater than they think. I’m influenced by the many great minds of the present and past. I truly believe in Phakama. It is a way of life, it’s a verb, it’s an action.”
